Abstract

Discomfort in passing the urine is the cardinal feature of Mutrakricchra which is commonly seen in the cases of urinary tract infections. With the introduction of antibiotics, infections have been checked to some extent but recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI) still remains burden for physicians.  In Ayurveda, concept of Naimiitika Rasayana as a part of immune modulator of the specific system can be used to control recurrent UTI. Taking this theme, a clinical study was carried on 33 patients of Mutrakrichchhra (Urinary Tract infection) which were treated with Karnjadi Kvatha in onr group, Karnjadi Kvatha with rasayana in second group and Karanjadi Kvatha with Rasayana administered after Koshtha Shuddhi with Aragvadha fruit pulp in third group.  Karnjadi Kvatha was formulated by selecting such drugs which are indicating in the treatment of Mutrakricchra. It contains Karanja (Pongamia glabra), Kiratatikta (Swertia chirayita), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Sariva (Hemisdesmus indicus) and Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysentrica). For the purpose of Rasayana, Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Gokshura (Tribulus terristeric) which are potent rasayana drugs of Mutravaha srotasa were selected. Results of the study showed that the therapy of both groups provided statistically significant improvement on the sign and symptoms of Mutrakrichhra and addition of Rasayana drugs in one of the group stopped the recurrences of it.
