HEPATIC PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF PIPPALI (PIPER LONGUM) AND ASHVAGANDHA (WITHANIA SOMNIFERA) IN HEPATOTOXICITY INDUCED BY ANTI-TUBERCULAR DRUGS

Abstract

Concomitant administration of Isoniazid (INZ) and rifampicin (RFM) was a trend in tuberculosis therapy, but it is reported to have hepatotoxicity. Ashvagandha (Withania somnifera) and Pippali (Piper longum) are well known Rasayana drugs and shown to have hepatoprotective action also. Therefore it was postulated that if these two Rasayana drugs are given along with INZ and RFM then their side effects may be reduced. Therefore prior to clinical trial it was thought desirable to evaluate their hepatoprotective action against INZ and RFM induced hepatotoxicity. The results of this study showed that both Ashvagandha and Pippali possess significant hepatoprotective action against INZ and RMF induced hepatotoxicity. But histopathological studies showed that action of Pippali was better than Ashvagandha.
