ROLE OF LANGHANA AND PÄ€CHANA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF DYSLIPIDEMIA

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is a disorder of lipoprotein metabolism, including lipoprotein overproduction or deficiency. It is primarily a Santarpanjanya Vyadhi so Chikitsa aims towards Apatarpana Upakrama i.e., Langhana, PÄchana and Shodhana according to Dosha and Vyadhibala. Therefore this study was done to evaluate the effect of Langhana and PÄchana done with DhÄnyaka-Shunthi Siddha Jala in the management of Dyslipidemia.

70 patients with abnormal lipid profile in the beginning were given Langhana (light diet) in the form of routine light meal (Eka Kala Bhojana) at lunch time and only Mudga Yusha (green gram soup) at dinner for four days. This was followed by PÄchana for 10 days with DhÄnyaka-Shunthi Siddha Jala which was prepared by mixing 6 gm drug comprising of 4.5 gm DhÄnyaka (coriandrum sativum Linn.) and 1.5 gm Shunthi (zingiber officinale Rosc.) in 400 ml of water and then boiling until half of the water (200 ml) remains. This medicated water was given for twice daily at morning and evening 6 pm.

14 days of course with Langhana and PÄchana provided significant relief in cardinal symptoms of malaise, laziness etc and decreased the weight and BMI. It also significantly reduced the serum cholesterol (7.66%), serum triglyceride (13.56%), S.LDL (7.89%) and S.VLDL (15.39%). In this series marked improvement was observed in 21.43% patients, moderate improvement in 67.14% and mild improvement in 7.15% patients while 4.29% patients remained unchanged.
