Efficacy of Bhallataka Kshira Paka Kalpa on Patients of Rheumatoid Arthritis (Amavata)

Bhallataka (Semecarpus anacardium) is Ushna, Tikshna and digestive; thus having all the actions required for the treatment of Amavata. Bhallataka is administered in various forms, one is its Kshira-Paka given in Kalpa schedule. A group of patients of rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed on the basis of American Society of Rheumatism (1967) were treated with Bhallataka Kshirapaka administered with initial dose of one nut/day followed by increasing one nut daily which become 5 nuts on 5th day and then this dose was kept constant up to 25th day and then it was reduced by one nut per day which became one nut on last 30th day of the treatment. It has been reported that the Bhllataka Kshirapaka-Kalpa therapy provided significant relief in general, cardinal and Ama symptoms of the disease and significantly reduced ESR and RA factor. In this series 42.9% patients got major improvement, 42.9% patients showed minor improvement and only 14.2% patients remained unchanged.
