Role of Vachadi Nasya and Medhya Rasayana Vati in Management of Dementia

Dementia (Smriti-Nashaa) is a degenerative disease of brain and Ayurveda advocates Nasya for diseases occurring above the clavicle (Urdhva-Jatru-Gata) and Medhya Rasayana for improving the mental health. Therefore Vachadi Nasya and Madhya Rasayana Vati were selected. In this study four courses of Vachadi Ghrita Nasya each of 10 days duration with seven days gap was given and simultaneously Medhya Rasayana Vati was administeredorally, continuously for two months duration ofthe treatment.

Results of this study showed that combination of Vachadi Ghrita Nasya and Madhya Rasayana provided significant relief in the symptoms of the disease. It caused significant increase in MMSE test which showed that the therapy significantly improvement in mental impairment and significantly decreased the Hemliton depression score indicative of decreasing the depression.

Consthe therapy showed that 50% patients got moderate improvement and the remaining 50% patients obtained minor improvement.
