OCCUPATION AND OSTEOARTHRITIS OF KNEE JOINT–A REVIEW

Abstract

Knee is a largest complex and compound joint which bears the entire body weight. Unlike the other joints in the body knee joint lacks a stable bony configuration like deep socket, mortise etc. Knee joint relies on ligaments, menisci, cartilage and bones in the joint to maintain its load bearing capacity. Hence, it is more prone for injuries. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common and frequent joint disease with prevalence of 22% to 39% in India.  Knee OA is a common chronic joint disorder and a major source of disability. OA of knee has many risk factors like genetic, age, gender, occupation, diet, obesity, previous injuries etc. Among these risk factors impact of occupation is seen very significantly. This is proved by many studies conducted on various occupational activities. Various occupational activities with improper body postures affect the homeostasis of mechanical structure of the knee joint. Some studies observed the influence of occupational activities (kneeling, squatting etc.) on particular compartment of knee joint and some occupational activities (driving, sports etc.) indicated as the risk factors for OA of knee joints. Some observational studies revealed the relation between occupation and sex in various OA of knee joint cases. This article has reviewed various occupational activities and their influence in the manifestation of OA of knee joint. Early identification of risk factors for OA will help physician to plan the treatment and to suggest precautionary measures.
